Atlas Ocean Voyages: A Guide to Luxury Expedition Cruises

Atlas Ocean Voyages is a relatively new cruise line that specializes in luxury expedition-style cruises aboard smaller, yacht-style vessels. People who choose Atlas Ocean Voyages typically dislike mega ships, are well-traveled, and want to explore locations larger ships cannot reach. Atlas Ocean Voyages has redefined cruising in Antarctica and the Arctic Circle, offering guests a luxury five-star experience.

It gives you a small-ship way to explore polar regions, Europe, the Caribbean, and South America. Its expedition vessels carry up to about 198 guests, creating a more intimate setting than large mainstream cruise ships.

Atlas Ocean Voyages suits you if you want expedition-focused itineraries, comfortable accommodations, destination-led activities, and select inclusions such as gear or hotel stays on certain polar voyages. Your experience will vary by ship, route, fare, and travel season.

You can compare the fleet, destinations, onboard amenities, dining, excursions, included costs, and practical booking details before choosing the sailing that fits your travel style and budget.

About Atlas Ocean Voyages

Atlas Ocean Voyages combines small-ship expedition cruising with upscale amenities and access to remote destinations. Its yachts emphasize intimate capacity, purpose-built exploration features, and a more personal onboard experience than large cruise ships.

Atlas Ocean Voyages operates as the U.S. subsidiary of Portugal-based Mystic Invest Holding. The group also owns or operates river-cruise, hospitality, attraction, and travel-related businesses, including DouroAzul and Mystic Cruises.

For you as a traveler, Atlas functions as a dedicated luxury expedition brand rather than a mass-market cruise line. Its itineraries focus on destinations such as Antarctica, the Arctic, Northern Europe, South America, and selected coastal or river regions.

Atlas markets its voyages around curated exploration, personalized service, and immersive shore experiences. Depending on the itinerary, you may join guided landings, cultural visits, wildlife excursions, or water-based activities supported by expedition staff.

About Atlas Ocean Fleet Profile

Atlas ships use a yacht-style layout rather than the broad, resort-like design common on large cruise ships. Their smaller scale supports access to ports, coastlines, and expedition areas that may not suit bigger ships.

Purpose-built expedition features typically include strengthened hulls for polar operations, Zodiac boats, expedition equipment, and observation areas. These features help you spend more time near wildlife, glaciers, remote shorelines, and other points of interest.

The onboard environment emphasizes comfort without the extensive entertainment infrastructure found on mainstream cruise ships. You can generally expect refined dining, lounges, wellness facilities, expedition briefings, and attentive service within a quieter setting.

Atlas Ocean Voyages Fleet Size And Capacity

Atlas Ocean Voyages fleet includes World Navigator, World Traveler, World Adventurer, and World Discoverer. The first three yachts form the core fleet most frequently associated with Atlas’s current brand presentation, while fleet listings also identify the latter two vessels.

Note: The World Voyager is currently leased out to Quark Expeditions. An interesting concept given Quark is considered by many to be the “best” of Antarctica cruise operators. I’ve not personally traveled on Quark. What’s clear is that Quark is upping their game in the hotel department, and as of November 2024, guests on Quark Expeditions can now enjoy free bar service. They have also added free WIFI. Both perks are meant to compete with Atlas Ocean Voyages, which added them earlier.

Each yacht carries fewer than 200 guests. This scale lets expedition teams organize landings and activities in smaller groups, though exact guest numbers depend on cabin configuration and operational requirements.

In 2026, Atlas Ocean Voyages began presenting accommodations under an all-suite structure with three suite categories.

Atlas Adventurer: The New Ship Coming In 2028

Atlas Adventurer is the world’s first luxury expedition sailing yacht and the first Atlas-class vessel. Her name embodies the spirit of exploration that characterizes each Atlas voyage, a forward-thinking ship that broadens the line’s reach to new locations while providing visitors with an enhanced, immersive maritime experience. Atlas Adventurer ushers the Atlas brand into a new era of opulent expedition cruising by embodying the promise of exploration, connection, and thoughtful innovation.

Once launched, this yacht will travel to curated destinations in Europe and Asia. Booking is open for sailings in 2028.

Destinations And Itineraries

Atlas Ocean Voyages combines small-ship access with itineraries focused on cultural discovery and expedition travel. Your route may include major ports, remote coastlines, or Zodiac-supported landings, depending on the region and sailing type.

Atlas Ocean Voyages Antarctic Voyages

Antarctica is a bucket-list destination for most avid travelers. Aside from African safaris, it’s also one of the most expensive trips you can take. My first cruise with Atlas Ocean Voyages was to Antarctica. I then took two more cruises with them, all in the same year.

Even though Atlas Ocean Voyages cruises the world, they are setting themselves apart from the traditional Antarctica cruise lines in that they offer experiences only on a luxury ship with luxury amenities and, in some cases, for less than the cruise lines that used to dominate cruising to Antarctica.

This Is What Sets Atlas Ocean Voyages Apart:

  1. The Hotel Department is 5 Star
  2. The Expedition Crew is 5 Star
  3. Despite being a leader in 5 Star cruising, all Atlas Cruises are 100% all-inclusive (minus flights to and from departure points and excursions that are not expedition)

You can compare Atlas Ocean Voyages to any cruise line that does the Antarctica route, and you will find that they cannot compete at the Atlas Ocean Voyages level.

Atlas Ocean Voyages Mediterranean Voyages

Mediterranean itineraries connect ports in countries such as Greece, Italy, Croatia, Spain, France, and Turkey. You can visit historic cities, archaeological sites, fishing villages, and islands while spending less time at sea than on many larger ships.

Routes may include the Greek Isles, the Adriatic, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, or the western Mediterranean. Port calls can feature guided visits to ancient ruins, local markets, museums, and regional wineries. Some sailings combine well-known destinations with smaller harbors that larger cruise ships cannot easily reach.

Santorini Greece

Atlas Ocean Voyages Northern Europe And Arctic Routes

Northern European voyages may explore the Baltic, Iceland, Greenland, the Norwegian Fjords, and the North Cape. Depending on the itinerary, you can combine capital cities and historic ports with scenic fjords, volcanic landscapes, glaciers, and coastal villages.

Arctic expeditions emphasize nature and wildlife more than conventional sightseeing. Expedition teams may use Zodiacs for shoreline access and present on local geography, wildlife, and indigenous cultures. Weather and sea conditions can change plans, so shore landings and exact routing remain flexible.

In addition to my Antarctic Cruise, I also did the Arctic Cruise so that I can speak to both experiences. I’ve also traveled to Greenland and Iceland several times, so I can explain what to expect.

World Voyages And Grand Expeditions

Atlas also offers longer voyages that link multiple regions or focus on remote destinations. A world voyage may combine European ports, the Atlantic, the Caribbean, and the Americas, while a grand expedition can concentrate on polar landscapes and wildlife.

Captains Choice

When you choose an expedition-style cruise, you choose to explore parts of the world that are extremely difficult to reach and weather-dependent. Safety will always be the #1 priority. As such, you will have “Captain’s Choice” for many potential landings. Even if Captain’s Choice is not stated for a destination, I can all but guarantee the itinerary you signed up for will change. If you choose an expedition-style cruise, this is what you are agreeing to:

1. The schedule, ports of call, or landings are “ll “subject to weather” and accessibility
2. The Captain monitors the weather, possibility of landing, and risk
3. Neither the cruise line nor the Captain can control or predict the weather
4. The Captain will not put anyone’s life at risk attempting a dangerous route
5. The Captain has the final say on ANY potential route or landing

If you cannot accept these terms, expedition cruising is not for you.
If you choose an expedition cruise, you need to embrace flexibility and take the highs with the lows; it’s a part of the adventure.

Sample Arctic Itinerary with Atlas Ocean Voyages

This is the Arctic itinerary we signed up for:

  • Day 1 – Ushuaia
  • Day 1 – Kangerlussuaq, Greenland
  • Day 2 – At Sea
  • Day 3 – Ilulissat (Disko Bay), Greenland
  • Day 4 – Eqi Glacier (Disko Bay) Captain’s Choice, Greenland

  • Day 7 – Arsuk, Greenland
  • Day 8 – Prince Christian Sound Captain’s Choice
  • Day 9 – At Sea
  • Day 10 – Reykjavík
  • Day 11 – Reykja

Captain’s Choice kicked in numerous times on this cruise. First and foremost, let’s talk about Disko Bay. Disko Bay is a large bay on Greenland’s west coast.

It’s somew”at “fa”ous” in Arctic cruising. Why? Weit’sit’s a bay full of stunning icebergs. However, it’s one of hundreds. We were in the area in August, and while other ships made it up there, we couldn’t because of the weather. I’ve been to Greenland a couple of times, and I’ve still not seen Disko Bay, and I don’t need to. There are many bays equally as stunning – and with fewer or no ships in them.

Our Captain on Atlas Ocean Voyages made the safety call for us not to attempt it. Getting into Disko Bay was semi-possible; getting out would have been impossible due to the oncoming freeze. So what did our Captain and crew do?

This – with a full mobile bar! You tell me how many people you know that have taken a Zodiac cruise through an ice bay and sipped on champagne, Baileys, or anything else your heart desires, brought to you via a Zodiac on the water!

  • Day 6 – Tobermory, United Kingdom
  • Day 7 – Douglas, United Kingdom
  • Day 8 – Dublin, Ireland

Caribbean And Americas Sailings

Atlas itineraries in the Caribbean and the Americas can take you to warm-water ports, coastal communities, and culturally significant sites. Routes may include islands in the eastern or southern Caribbean, Central American destinations, and other regional ports suited to smaller ships.

I have yet to take a Caribbean sailing, so I cannot advise on destinations or routes.

Onboard Accommodations With Atlas Ocean Voyages

You can choose from veranda accommodations and suite categories designed around space, outdoor access, and included services. Your fare generally includes room service, while higher accommodation tiers add features such as expanded in-suite dining, stocked minibars, and premium L’Occitane bath products.

Veranda Staterooms

Atlas Ocean Voyages has reclassified its guest accommodations as suites, but the specific layout and included amenities still depend on the category you book. Veranda accommodations offer private outdoor space, so you can step outside without leaving your cabin. Veranda categories suit you if you value outdoor views and fresh air but don’t need the extra living space or upgraded services of higher suite levels. All suites receive 24-hour in-suite dining, premium beverages, a stocked minibar, L’Occitane bath products, and binoculars.s

  • Owner’s Suite / Navigator Suite: ~355–465 sq. ft. with separate living areas, oversized/double balconies, double vanities, and butler service.
  • Discovery / Journey Suite: ~382–445 sq. ft. featuring expanded living space, upgraded amenities, and butler service.
  • Superior / Deluxe Suite: ~280–335 sq. ft. with comfortable lounging space and upgraded bath features.
  • Veranda Suite / Veranda: ~215–270 sq. ft. with a walk-out private balcony and sitting area.
  • Infinity / Horizon Suite (French Balcony): ~270 sq. ft. featuring floor-to-ceiling drop-down/Juliette windows instead of a walk-out deck.
  • Solo / Porthole/Oceanview: ~183–185 sq. ft. for single or compact occupancy (porthole or window-only depending on deck configuration).

The Solo / Porthole/Oceanview

This is the “most affordable” suite on board; however, it is also on deck 3, where the mud room is. And deck 3 is often under the waves. We stayed on deck 5, and while it wasn’t underwater, the waves still rose above our deck several times. That said, if budget is the #1 concern, this room will suffice. And if it doesn’t sell out, you might get upgraded.

The Veranda Suite

We stayed in a Veranda Suite for all three of our cruises. They are not the fanciest on the ship, but they blow away any other suite I’ve stayed in! For the price, they are exceptional quality. The shower in the bathroom is the biggest I’ve ever had – big enough for two people at one time.

Dining And Culinary Experiences On Atlas Ocean Voyages

All of your meals and drinks are included. All Atlas dining takes place in one dining room located on Deck 4; there are no specialty dining restaurants. However, a specialty dinner experience called Explorer’s Table is available on polar voyages in the Dome observation area; it follows an omakase-style format with culinary highlights inspired by Spain, Korea, France, Argentina, and North America.

I think the food on Atlas Ocean Voyages is spectacular. The menu changes daily; all food is cooked to order and every night is a new theme. Here are some examples:

Throughout the day, there is also:

  • 7-Aft Grill: Poolside casual lunch by day; transforms into an open-air chophouse (Josper charcoal grill) for steak and seafood on select/Epicurean sailings. Closed on polar and Antarctic itineraries
  • Paula’sla’s Pantry: A cozy grab-and-go café for coffee, juices, smoothies, sandwiches, pizza, pastries, and fruit. I highly recommend Paula’s for the fresh-squeezed juices.

Life On Board Atlas Ocean Voyages

Atlas Ocean Voyages emphasizes enrichment and destination immersion rather than large-scale cruise entertainment. You can attend presentations from expedition staff, naturalists, historians, or other specialists who explain the places, wildlife, and cultures connected to your itinerary.

The program often supports what you see ashore. On polar voyages, briefings may cover wildlife behavior, conservation, landing procedures, Zodiac operations, and biosecurity requirements. These sessions help you prepare for shore landings and understand the environment you are visiting.

During free time, you can read, talk with fellow travelers, relax in shared spaces, or join informal discussions. Don’t expect extensive production shows, casinos, or amusement attractions typical of larger cruise ships. The intimate setting emphasizes conversation, learning, and the next destination.

Wellness And Fitness Onboard Atlas Ocean Voyages

You can maintain a simple fitness routine at sea through onboard exercise facilities and scheduled wellness activities. Depending on the ship and itinerary, options may include cardio and strength equipment, stretching sessions, yoga, or guided workouts.

The spa provides additional opportunities to relax, with treatments and amenities that may inclL’Oréalréal Paris products. Availability varies by sailing, so check the daily program and reserve popular treatments early.

Expedition days often involve walking, climbing steps, boarding Zodiacs, and handling changing weather conditions. Use sea days to stretch, exercise, or rest between landings. Comfortable pacing matters because itineraries may include frequent excursions and relatively few full days at sea.

Atlas Ocean Voyages Dress Code

Despite the price point, Atlas Ocean Voyages is quite relaxed on dress code. A couple of nights warrant dressing; it’s optional and definitely casual. You will not see gala-style ball gowns or prom dresses with trains ten feet long. Linda and I particularly liked this. Not because we are not into dressing; it’s simply that, while on holiday, you get to choose whether you want to go all out. Here I am on one of”my “most dresse”-up” eveni.ngs:

Atlas generdoesn’tesn’t focus on formal nights or elaborate dressing. You can change out of expedition gear before dining, but a jacket and tie or cocktail attire are usually unnecessary.

Shore Excursions And Land Programs With Atlas Ocean Voyages

Shore excursions and land programs vary by cruise type. If you’ve chosen an expedition cruise, most, if not all, excursions, bar the kayaking, will be included.

If you are not on an expedition-style cruise, excursions work the same way they do on any cruise. Atlas Ocean Voyages offers a variety of options to book, or you can arrange your own land program.

Atlas Ashore provides a choice of complimentary shore excursions at every port on eligible sailings – aka expedition cruises. These tours typically focus on local history, architecture, food, traditions, and daily life, giving you a structured way to explore without arranging every detail yourself.

Options may include guided walks through historic districts, visits to museums or heritage sites, and experiences built around local customs. Atlas has also offered specially curated cultural excursions through partnerships such as Afar Recommends, with examples including visits to the Evita Museum, a historic turf house in Iceland, and local workshops or tastings.

Pre- And Post-Cruise Stays

You can extend your trip with Atlas-arranged hotel stays and multi-day land programs before or after the voyage. Atlas offers a complimentary one-night pre-cruise hotel stay for Antarctica expeditions, though eligibility and details vary by departure. We stayed at the Hilton in Buenos Aires the night before we took our charter flight to Ushuaia. We also added a couple of extra nights on our return to do some sightseeing in Buenos Aires.

Land programs can help you spend more time in the embarkation or disembarkation region, or travel inland to notable sites beyond the port. These arrangements may include accommodations, transportation, guided visits, and selected meals, but inclusions differ by program.

Confirm the hotel location, transfer schedule, check-in and check-out times, luggage handling, and any extra charges before you book. If you arrange independent travel, allow enough time to reach the ship because the vessel usually cannot wait for late arrivals.

What’s Included With Atlas Ocean Voyages

As I mentioned earlier, a key selling point of Atlas Ocean Voyages is its all-inclusive experience. Here’s what’s included:

  • Use of binoculars and expedition equipment
